Mod Doom joined the Community Management team earlier this year and he’s joining us now for another instalment of Behind the Crown. Mod Doom is known primarily for his push to bring open and more direct communication to the RuneScape community. This time on Behind the Crown we’ll be getting to know Mod Doom a little better, learning his RuneScape playstyle, and getting a peek Behind the Crown at what’s involved with CM.

• For those unaware, what is a community manager and what, in general, does the job entail?
• How did you get your start in this field and what led you to the games industry?

RuneScape Community Management in 2023

• When you joined Jagex your arrival was put in a way that would give the community a representative that’s more visible and present. How has that gone over the first few months?
• What’s been the biggest thing that has surprised you or acted as a learning experience?
• How hard is it to balance hearing what the community has to say, listening, being that friend and champion versus sometimes delivering tough news (hello FSOA) and ensuring the team’s messaging comes across properly?

A Mutual Trust

• Our previous section talked about where RuneScape’s community management lies right now, trust is important. How do you and how does the CM team build trust?
• In the past our podcast has imagined the CM system as one where the team has a certain amount of leeway and wiggle room to get things done, things that can be difficult (i.e. nerfs). How important is it to have the trust of the community? Both for yourself and the wider team.
• Does immersing yourself in the community, like you did upon your return help with that?
